We often receive messages from visitors who look for lost members of their family.
Usually, the requests are related to digging the roots (genealogy). We do not provide a service as such (there are useful links to fine genealogy/ancestry services on the Links page), but our experience teaches that often other visitors do provide useful information.
Use the alphabetical list below to find any of the family surnames that have been emailed to us.
(A separate entry has been created for each surname in the original message).
If you are able to respond to one of these searches for past relatives, please use the email address associated to each entry... and good luck in your quest!
Hi Daniel!
Is there anyone out there who can help me with some info?
My great grandparents lived at no. 7 Bedford Road E17 (their names are ARTHUR AXFORD and ROSINA née JEWEL): numbers 1, 3, 5 , and SEVEN were all bombed in the last war. Number 9 onwards still stand, hence you can still see the exact spot where my great grandparents house once stood, sadly now all car park. My dear mum RENE (Irene) NICHOLS née RIDLEY said that their garden in summer was full of Asters a variety called... ostrich plume... Sadly my grand father died after falling down after sweeping snow in the small front garden. Are there, I wonder, any photos of those houses? Or indeed was there anything pictured and documented in the local papers at the time?
Also, opposite them lived their daughter albeit lived in Forest road, on the corner of Gaywood rd (?), and said to have faced Lloyds Park. Today there are trees on the spot and old folks home?? I was told that it was a land mine? Apparently my great aunt, Minnie Olive, and her children were in an Anderson shelter at the bottom of the garden and buried for four or so hours. Min's husband Joe rushed along to help in the rescue (Joe was a doorman at Walthamstows PALACE THEATRE). My great grandparent's great grandson is JOHN AXFORD, well known on The Antiques Road show. My great grandfather was a Foreman at Hornimans Tea. Where was his exact place of work, (Hornimans factory)? His brother HENRY, on hearing of his brother's death, took his own life. He lived at COURTNEY PLACE E17: he apparently taped up all the doors and windows, with a notice reading do not enter - gas on...! He too I believe he worked at Hornimans.

My grandparents, Alfred John Archer and Emily Annie Clark, were married March 24, 1907 at The Lighthouse, Walthamstow. Their marriage certificate states that they were married "according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the United Methodist Free Churches". I have two questions. First of all, the marriage certificate gives their residence as 52 St. James Street, Walthamstow, and I have been unable to find this street on a map. Does it still exist? Has it been renamed? Secondly, if anyone has any connection with this family, I would love to exchange information. At the moment, I'm beginning to be convinced that my great-grandmother, the wife of Frederick Clark, was christened "Grannie"! Thanks for any help,

Hi, Georgina,
Thanks for writing.
I really don't know how old Harry and Christine actually were in '63. I would guess that Christine was in her early teens. Harry simply seemed to be 'a grown-up' to me; I was only 9. He could have been anywhere between forty to mid 50's, I suppose.
My Nan - Anne - and her son John lived at 115 until about 1979. They then moved in with my Mum and aunt who were both widows. They all lived together in Woodford Green thereafter.
I honestly can't be sure that the Bucklands were still at 117 after 1979.
Good luck with your search.

Hello, is there any way of seeing who lived at the above address in 1929?
My mother in law has this address on her birth certificate, but she was put into Barnardos and has no record really of her family
She was born in 1929 but at a young age was taken to Dr. Barnardo's Home. She has the name of Ellen Babbs as her mother and Walter James Humphrey as her father, a milk roundsman. The address shown is Bemsted Road but do not know if that is one or both of the parent's address. We can find no trace of them marrying and in fact it may be he was married to someone else at the time. Any information would be very helpful as she is now 84 and still does not know much about her family and if she still has any.
Many thanks

I am investigating my family history and am trying to find out more about a Margaret Barker who married my relative Athole Menzies in 1937. On their marriage certificate they are both recorded as living at 14 Rensburg Road, and she is shown as being a 'toothbrush stamper' by occupation. Unfortunately, I can't find out anything else about Margaret - where and when she was born (c. 1918?), who her parents were etc. I also don't know what happened to her later - there's no obvious record of a death for her, and there is no one left in my family who might know. I guess WW2 might have stirred things up a bit! If anyone could shed any light on the story, I'd be very grateful!

BARTLETT/BANNOCKS/STEWART - Posted 15 Aug 2011
My widower Gt.Grandpa James STEWART's 3rd marriage was to widow Emily Alice BARTLETT (nee BANNOCKS) on 15/9/1909 at the Parish Church of St James the Greater Walthamstow - both were living at 38 Netley Road - he was a Ship's Cook at the time.
Their witnesses were John Thomas GROVES & James' daughter Phoebe [aka Beatrice] Mary STEWART - who married in the same Church in October 1909 to Peter F MILLER.
The 1911 census records Emily Alice STEWART living at 18 Vernon Road, Walthamstow, with 2 of James' children from his previous marriage to Harriet STEWART (nee KIRBY), who died in 1903 in Walthamstow.
Emily Alice BARLETT's 1st marriage was to Reuben BARLETT on 25/12/1893 at the Parish Church of St Philips in Tower Hamlets, Middx (they were both in Service at the time) and I believe they had a daughter, possibly also named as Emily Annie(?) BARTLETT. Reuben died in Walthamstow 29/3/1909.
[Please see my earlier Family History entries under 'S' for STEWART, etc & 'M' for MILLER, etc]
I'd greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who's ancestral lineage links with these folk, please.

BRIGHT/PRING/SIMMONS FAMILIES
I
am seeking information on these families some of whom left Walthamstow in 1911 and 1912 to emigrate to New Zealand. Charles Bright and his father Edwin were master cabinet makers and I would like to find out more about this industry in Walthamstow. We still have one or two pieces of furniture intricately inlaid and carved. Charles Bright lived in 14 Russell Rd in 1901. He died in 1911 and shortly afterwards his wife and 3 small daughters left for NZ. His wife’s family – mother Amelia Pring, brothers John and Harold Pring and sister Florence (married to John Robert Simmons) and their families all arrived in New Zealand in 1912. I would like to hear from any family members still living in Walthamstow, or anyone who can tell me more about the furniture making industry in Walthamstow in the 1880-1910 period. Thank you, Heather email:

BRYAN family - originally O'Briens
My grandfather was William Bryan born in the Strand, London in 1892. He was the son of Daniel Bryan, an Irishman from Derry, who moved to Walthamstow with his wife, Emily (nee SWAIN) and children in the early 1900s, I think. They lived in Chingford Road, just down the road from the Bell pub. My granddad worked for the Refuge Insurance company, I'm not sure if this was in Walthamstow or not, I think so. I'd love to hear from anyone with Bryan ancestors who may be connected to mine. Colleen Morrison - email
BANKS family
My dad's father, Albert Banks, moved Shoreditch to Islington, then Tottenham before marrying Edith Florence PASK and finally settling in Walthamstow during the early part of the 1900s. They lived in Billet Road for many years. My grandfather was originally a rag and bone man but later worked as a delivery man for the Co-op which I think must have been in the High Street. BROWN
My grandparents and then parents ran the "Lord Robert's off license at 16 Macdonald Rd, Walthamstow. Our family name is Brown. My grandfather was Alexander and my father was Peter. I believe the Lord Roberts was our family business from around 1905 - 1985. I am Peter's only child and although lived in Walthamstow, was sent away to boarding school in Westcliff. My birth mother died in my child birth and for about a year my father had uniformed nannies looking after me. I have photos of the nanny pushing my pram in Lloyd's park. I guess my Dad though he was doing the best for me. I do remember coming home at weekends, I used to help out in the off licence and had to teach my parents how to convert shillings to pence when the decimal conversion came. We lived near a large factory - Fullers (?). There was a bakery on the corner of Forest Rd and Fulbourne Road. There was a corner grocery shop on Macdonald Road and Spencer (?) Rd. Next to our off licence was a newsagents called "Sams" it was then replaced with a doctors office. There was a great Fish n' chip shop on the lower end of Wood Street. I recall that there was a dancer (ballerina ) called Doreen Wells who lived on MacDonald Rd and she then married the Duke of Londonderry or similar. My grandparents sponsored a street party for when Queen Elizabeth was crowned and then my parents did the same for the Silver Jubilee. The first time I actually went to school in my home town was when I went to the Waltham Forest Polytechnic. My family used Dr. Mackie who had a surgery just off Wood Street. I have lived in Florida since 1984. If there is anyone that remembers my parents Peter & Elizabeth Brown, please respond via email. Thanks,

Hello there
I have just found this site and it is really lovely to see all the memories and stories.
I am looking for my Grandfather's family who lived in Walthamstow from 1905 onwards. His name was Harry Cunnington, he had brothers Benjamin, George, John. I know he married in 1922 to Ivy Rafter and had two children Leonard and Joy.
I know Walpole Road was one address at the time of the first world war and I am sure some of them must still be around. I would be really grateful for any information about them.
Once again great site.

As you know, I replied to you by the private Email facility, telling you that I had found a picture of William John Cardo in a St John's Ambulance uniform complete with medals and I suggested that he must be the Cardo family member for which the Cardo Memorial Hut was named. Unfortunately, at that time I wasn't able to give you the location of the hut.
I am pleased to advise you that I can now remedy this situation and tell you that I have found reference to the Cardo Memorial Hut in two successive reports of the Walthamstow Medical Officer of Health for 1933 and 1934. As a result, I am pleased to advise you that it was located opposite the Water Works in Forest Road.
Respects,

Dear Daniel,
Back in January I emailed some queries about the Cardo family and have now received a helpful private reply. We are particularly interested to learn more about a building believed to be in a park/recreation ground close to a road junction on the Leabridge Road.
We now know that it appears to be known as the Cardo Memorial Hut. One website refers to its use as a first aid point on bank holidays by the St. John Ambulance Brigade in 1933.
Can anyone throw light on its origins, precise location and which member of the Cardo family it commemorates?
Mary RADFORD (Danbury, Essex) Private Reply Public Reply
Dear Daniel,
We have been carrying out research into the CARDOs my husband's mother's family.
I am wondering if any of your Walthamstow Memories correspondents might be able to help.
We were told some years ago by a chance acquaintance of a pavilion/summer house building on a sports ground on the Leabridge Road, bearing the name CARDO. It was near a road junction at which our informant regularly had to wait in the traffic on his way to London. Can anyone tell us about this? Several members of the family were active in sports and we would like to know which member of the family it commemorated, and its exact location if it still exists.
The Cardos were bootmakers, their business having originated in Plaistow and Stratford in the late 1800s, and a branch of the family had shops in Leytonstone (where they also had a factory) and in High Street, Walthamstow until 1926. Is there anyone in the Walthamstow area who remembers the shops, or maybe had relatives who might have worked for them?

CUNNEW
I have taken on a huge task and at the moment am not doing very well!!! My grandmother Doris was born in Walthamstow in 1919, is currently 87 years old, and not in very good health. She has been trying to trace her brother and sister for over 70 years and has had no success; she has even tried Cilla Black on Suprise Suprise, but no success. I am hoping that perhaps you can help?
Her mother, Rosina CUNNEW (nee Hughes, born in Wales, had a brother called Bert?) died in or around 1926, and shortly afterwards, her father James CUNNEW took her younger sister, IVY CUNNEW, aged approx 5yrs, and her younger brother, JAMES (JIMMY) CUNNEW, aged approx 3yrs, for a 'bike ride'. He came back without them, telling my nan that they had been adopted by a rich family in Greenwich. My nan has been searching for them ever since. I have just started myself, but with very few details to go on, I am not doing so well!!
Please, if anyone can give me any information, it would be greatly appreciated. I think my nan has resigned herself to the fact that they may be dead, and that she may never find them, but it is such a sad story, and there must be SOMEONE out there that can give me some info - any info - on who the adpotive family are, or what king of agency was used - eg Barnado's, Salvation Army, church... I would dearly love to be able to give my nan the information she has been seeking for seven decades, if only to put her mind at rest. If you think you can help, please email me, or call me on 01733344142, or 07930335864.Thank you very much for your time,

Edith Lucy CLARKE was born 16Dec1875 at Back of Castle, Parish of Walthamstow - the daughter of William CLARKE and Amelia SAPSFORD. In the 1881 Census, William and Amelia and their seven chidlren lived at 13 Payze & Gatehouse Cottages in the parish of St Peter in Walthamstow. The family continued to live in the Walthamstow/Woodford area for many years. William and Amelia's children were Amelia Selina, William J, George, Jessey, Marian, Albert and Edith Lucy - born between 1852 and 1875. Albert and Edith moved from Walthamstow soon after their marriage, living at Godalming, Wickam and Dover before leaving for Australia in 1912 and 1913. DOWDESWELL/JEFFERY - 30 Jan 2011: Hi Daniel and John, I am researching my family history: my great, great grandfather George Dowdeswell was a resident of Walthamstow from about 1888 onward's. In 1891, he and his wife Ellen along with their 11 children were living at 2 Longfellow's road, George was then a retired met police inspector and was working as a school board inspector. In 1901 the family were then living at 112 Albert road, Walthamstow. Does anyone know's if these addresses and even the houses still exsist?
My great grandmother Alice Dowdeswell married Ernest Jeffery on the 1st august 1900 in St Stephen's church, Walthamstow, which I think no longer exsists.
In 1891 Ernest, aged 14, was an assistant in a lace warehouse. He was living at 39 Cuthbert street, Walthamstow, with parents Jane and John. In 1911 he and Alice, his wife, were living at 59 Grove road, Walthamstow. They had 6 children, 3 of whom were triplets: Muriel Faith, Phyllis Hope and Winifred Charity Jeffery. Winifred died at 5 month's old..... Ernest was still working in the drapery trade as a manufacturers agent. In 1926 Ernest, then aged 47, left his family, apparently for a younger woman - possibly Henrietta Ada Rich????....no one knows where he went after his departure, did he stay in walthamstow or surrounding area???..
If anyone knows anything about the above names, I would love to hear... Thank you so much. Regards.

DICE family - sometimes spelled Dyce
What a great site this is, I was born in Walthamstow and it holds such happy memories for me, so I'm always trawling around here and particularly love the photos.
My grandmother was born Mary Lousia Dice in the village of
Tolleshunt Knights, Essex in 1892. In either 1899 or 1900, her
father, Sam Dice, then a ploughman, loaded the family's precious

Hi Daniel,
I wondered if anyone has any memories or photos to share of Ann (Amy Hampton) & Jack Huddle of (I think) North Countess Road, Walthamstow, who ran their own dance studio possibly in 1950's/1960's. Sorry to be so vague, Ann is my Great Aunt and I have vague memories of her when I was a small child and that she was a cat lover. I am trying to fill in my family tree and would love to hear from anyone who knew her, the Hampton or Ellison family, who her sister Agnes Janet (my nan) married into.
Many Thanks

We are trying to find information on my wife's great uncle C.A. or Arthur EDWARDS and his wife Maud Mary. They lived in Walthamstow in 1908, and again at 12 Pearl Road, Walthamstow, from 1930 to 1954 or later. We are trying to find:
-When and where they died and where they are buried.
-If they had children.

23-Feb-2009: Norman, Daniel and other list members, Thank you.
We live in suburban Chicago and have no good way of checking for these burials. Is it possible for someone there to contact the cemetery for us. Of course we are willing to do the same here in the Chicago, Illinois area for those in England. We are glad to share our information on my wife's EDWARDS family of Wales, Walthamstow, Brighton and New Jersey/Florida/Texas here in the States. The father of Arthur (C.A.) EDWARDS was Thomas Roberts(on) EDWARDS; siblings Herbert Stanley(Spencer) EDWARDS, Maud EDWARDS GAMMON, Howell Tudor EDWARDS, and Lawrence Vincent EDWARDS.
Herbert and Howell lived in New Jersey and Florida; Lawrence in Texas; and Maud in the Brighton, England area.
I will be grateful for your help.

29-Mar-2009: Hello, just come across your website while looking at Walthamstow links. It's brilliant.
My Grandfather Frederick William GREGORY lived in Clarence Road, Higham Hill, Walthamstow, with his wife Emily and several children, according to the 1911 census. He worked for the GPO as a porter/ sorter. He was 38 at that time.
He died in 1931 from broncho-pneumonia at the age of 59, and had been living at Oatland Rise, which I think is off of St Andrew's Road. Are there any of his relatives still in Walthamstow? Any more information we can get would be a great help. He was a very elusive man. Regards,

GROGAN
I would like to post the following on your family surnames list if possible. I was born in Walthamstow, Thorpe Coombe to be
precise, in 1953 and lived in Acacia Road until I was 17 when we moved to Chingford. I went to Thomas Gamuel Junior School
and George Gascoigne and Willowfield senior schools, leaving in 1969. I have very many happy memories of living in
Wathamstow at that time, the best being the Saturday morning pictures at The Gaumont, Lea Bridge Road, the pie and mash shop
Manzes in The High Street and going on the annual day trip to Southend with the Lighthouse Methodist Church, Sunday School.
I am interested in hearing from anyone born in Walthamstow with the surname Grogan.
I come from a long line of Grogans and have been researching our family for the last three years.
My grandfather (Albert Grogan born 1901) was the youngest child of a family of 13 so there must be several more Grogans still
living in that area. Georgia Draper (née Grogan) 02.03.2007 Kind Regards

GROSVENOR
My father, Edward Francis Grosvenor, was born in Walthamstow, UK on July 4, 1912, to Eleanor and Edward Grosvenor. Edward and Eleanor emigrated to Canada in December 1912, along with my father, Edward, and Eleanor’s children from her first marriage. Edward Grosvenor Sr. had worked as a teamster somewhere in Walthamstow, and was sent to Canada with help from his “union”.
Eleanor was the widow of a Mr. Wall, a pub ‘boxer’ who died when someone ruptured his appendix with a punch. When the Grosvenors emigrated, they had to leave one of the Wall children (Thomas Wall) at a ‘home’ in Walthamstow (Thomas was ill with some communicable disease at the time and would not be permitted on the ship).
If anyone has any information on either the Wall family or the Grosvenor family, please contact.

HOPE family - posted 22 Sep 2009
Hi! I just came upon your site during my search for information about my ancestors. My great grandfather, William John McMillan, and his family apparently lived in Walthamstow up until about 1920. His son, Henry (my grandfather), was an apprentice toolmaker at the AEC plant there. I think they may have lived at 40 Grosvenor Park Road because I came across that address scribbled on a WWI military record that may relate to his brother, Alfred, who worked for a music store before they all moved to Australia. I do know that my grandmother, Winifred Hope, met Henry while he was living in Walthamstow and followed him to Australia to marry in 1924. Her father, John James Hope, was a printer and the family lived at 26 Higham Hill Road. I am told the family attended a Baptist church in Higham Hill Road. Any information about either family would be most appreciated. Best wishes,

I was born in Wyatts Lane in Walthamstow 60 years ago and revisited it again in 2013 after 44 years in Australia. I am researching my family history and love your site as it gives me a real picture of what it must have been like when my parents and grandparents lived there many years ago. It has also given me a sense of belonging and at some stage I will put some information out there for your families list but at this stage though, I am looking for my Aunt, Rita Kendall née Smiles. We lost contact with Rita a few years ago when my Dad (her brother, Alfred Smiles) began to suffer from the effects of Alzheimer's. Rita was married to Bill, who has since passed away, and had 4 children, Kay, Billy, Kevin and Julie. I have no idea where the Kendalls lived in Walthamstow but Dad and Rita grew up in Maynard Road. Their father's name was Horace Reginald and his second wife, Rita's mother, was Dorothy Hartley. I vaguely recall that Rita may have moved to Chingford after her husband died but I am not sure. She had a brother Eddie and a sister Doris. Eddie married a lady named Essie or Elsie, they had 2 children Beverly and Malcolm. Eddie has passed away and so have her parents, not sure about Doris. Doris married Arthur Salmon and they also had 2 children, Arthur and John. I am not sure if they even live around Walthamstow any more I did receive some infomation that Eddie's wife might live at 91 Kettlebaston Road off Bridge Road. I have been trying for months to find my relatives, but at the same time at least of of my relative was trying to find us, I might say he did a better job of it then I did. He is a son of my mothers cousin. There last name is Morgan, his mother was a Connie Cole before she married. David has been trying to fill us in on all the details he can, but I am continuing to look also. It has been since the 60's since my mother has had any contact with her family, until David found us.
Thank you very much for your site. It has been very interesting. From Alice Reardon If you could post this for me I would appreciate it. And I can be reached at email.
Do you remember two Doctors named Langley, who lived in Walthamstow, London?

Can you tell me the name of any local Historians, or local papers who may be able to help me trace my family. I have quite a lot of info but cant prove its the right family. Look forward to hearing from you.

LIVERMORE
Does anyone remember the Livermore family who had a shop in Hoe St. Walthamstow? My Aunty Loll (Laura) lived there with her husband and nine children. I think they were there for many years - certainly in 1937 when the family were growing up. I know they sold linens but think it was probably a general store. Would be interested to have any information about them.

LOTT
Researching my families background, I see that my fathers family were in Walthamstow. In the 1901 census, the LOTT family were in Black Horse Lane, in the 1881 census they were at Higham Hill Farm. I notice the name Higham is significant in the area, but I presume that Higham Farm has long been buried by housing. It seem likely they were also in the area at the intervening census, i.e. 1891, but I have no details as yet. I would be interested to know where this farm was located and what is built upon it.

LUNN/CLARK/SAPSFORD
My husband's grandparents were married at St Mary's Church, Walthamstow in 1896. Albert Seaton LUNN had been born 1872c at Streatham in Essex but lived with his grandparents in Dogmersfield in Hampshire after his father died when he was about 10 years old. My husband and I visited Walthamstow in 1999 but did not have all this information at that time. We have a copy of Edith's birth and death certificates and the church copy of her marriage to Albert Seaton Lunn. Would love to contact any descendants of the CLARKE/LUNN or SAPSFORD families in your area. Do the addresses I have from the certificates still exist? Hoping to be able to further my research with your help Regards

LESTER
I am searching for information about my husband's grandfather, Charles Rollo Lester. He was shown on the Electoral Registers @ 12 Clifford Road, Walthamstow from 1934 to 1953-Polling District East, District: Hale End. He was shown with Esther Lester, presumably his 2nd wife. She was shown on this register until 1966. Charles R.Lester and his 1st wife (Ruth Shepherd Harrison) came to Canada in early 1900. She was born Feb.21,1883 in Hartlepool, Durham, England. They had 2 daughters, Ruth Tranmere Lester (born Mar.01,1912) and Roma Shepherd Lester (born May 25,1914) both born in Vancouver,B.C. Canada. I have not been able to find their marriage in England or Canada. But I know that Charles returned to England and his wife stayed here and remarried. I am looking for information about his marriage to Esther and if possible the date of his birth, death and where he is buried. I would also like to have information about Esther's date of birth, date of death, etc. Thank you.

I am working on my family tree, and would appreciate any information on these families, who lived in Walthamstom in the first part of 1900.
My grandparents (Daniel Joseph & Eliza Ellen neé Stacey) lived if the Ballard Almshouses (Maynard Rd), and later my grandmother moved into the Squires Almshouses.
My Aunt Nellie Kate Quinn (neé Lee) lived in (31?) Bacontree Avenue, with her sister Lily.
Enid May Counsell married my uncle Albert Edward Quinn, I believe they had a son called David in 1936.
Lastly, I've come across a Mr. L. Little, who lived (in 1935) at 354, Hoe Street and was also connected with the family.
Any - no matter how small - piece of information shall be accepted with gratitude. Thanks.

Hi Steve,
My "family connection" to Gosport Road is a strong one but, in terms of chronology, it may only just overlap.
My maternal grandparents, John 'Jack' Manicom and his wife, Sarah Anne (nee Emery) lived at number 115 all of their married lives. (Jack died in 1957) I can't be sure when they moved there and I'm not sure when they married. I do know that their first son - My uncle John Manicom - was born, at the house in about 1922. They had three other children, Joyce, Edna (my Mum) and Bill. They were all born between 1923 and 1931 (approximately).
This photo - looking from the back of the house looking toward Queens Road cemetery beyond the wall - shows my grandad, Jack seated front/left. His wife 'Annie' (my Nan) is at the back on the right. Their youngest son - my uncle - Bill is standing behind Jack and, just creeping into the shot, peeking over Bill's shoulder, is my uncle John - their oldest. I would estimate that this picture was probably taken in 1950 (ish). Number 71 would be about 12 houses away to the left of shot.
This shot was taken in the back garden of number 115 and is looking back toward the house. The two houses to the right would be numbers 113 and 111. Number 71 is tantalisingly close, off to the right.
This was the last picture ever taken of my grandad, he died very soon after, in 1957. He is buried in Queens Road cemetery, which, of course is at the foot of the garden where he is standing. I measured his final resting place to be 110 yards from the spot where he is pictured.
I will look to see if I have any more pictures closer to the time that you are writing about.
Kind regards for now

Two of our ancestors Charles Martin and his brother Francis William Martin (known as Bill) lived at 71 Gosport Rd, Walthamstow, in the early 1920s, both brothers emigrated to Australia. Francis William set sail for Brisbane in 1923 aboard the Esparence Bay and his brother Charles left on the Sophocles in 1924 also for Brisbane, both were teenagers who appeared to travel on their own. Francis occupation is listed as a farm labourer and Charles an electrician - it seems it was quite common for young east end people to leave for oz, if anyone has any comments to add about the subject or any family connections we would love to here from you
Many thanks,

18 Aug 2011 - MÜLLER: Seeking a miracle... ... to find the birthplace of my Gt. Grandpa Heinrich Christopher MÜLLER.
The Evangelical German Church of St Pauls [1880 London] Baptism Register of my Gt.Uncle, records (in German) includes the following details -
ELTERN - Heinrich Christopher MÜLLER - (parents)
Arbeiter aus - (looks like) EUPL, HANOVER - (Worker from)
He married 1874 in London, age 24 - his father's name was recorded as Peter MÜLLER, A Mariner
For some years my Gt.Grandpa worked as a Sugar Baker.
In 2010 I sought the expertise of a German Genealogist, based in Bremen, who extensively researched the archives for possible birth records in the parishes of ENDEL, ENSEN, EISSEL, ESSEL + INSEL for a Heinrich Christoph[er] MÜLLER, with a father named as Peter MÜLLER. It proved to be a very expensive exercise, without a positive result.
So, as a Worker from somewhere in Hanover, where might he have been born & in which parish?
If there's a fellow ancestral researcher in Germany, who would find my quest a challenge too-good-to-ignore, please let me know.
After a few year's of research in England, I have now found & purchased various certificates & documents of him, his Scottish wife & some of their children, to identify him as my Gt.Grandpa, linking me via my father's lineage. The records show that their German names were fully anglicised by the 1881 London census records.

MCMILLAN family
22-Sep-2009: Hi!

I would love some more information if possible to help fill in the life of my grandfather George Charles MONDAY. I found him on the 1911 census working and living at the COMMON GATE HOTEL, Markhouse Road, Walthamstow. He was 31 years of age at the time and later that year he married and immigrated to Australia. The licensed Victuallers were Alfred TOYE snr and jnr. The information from the census was so interesting as I have my granparent's autograph book signed by the TOYE family and many other people from Walthamstow - Steve BARKER, Clara SHORT, Thomas WEBSTER, Mrs DOILEY, Mr E. HASLER, J.P. NOLAN, F. G. HENNINGS, J. STEPHENSON (old ship-mate)?, F.C. SANDERS. Any information would be much appreciated.

MORLEY family
19 Apr 2009 Hello,
I am attaching the promised photo of my uncle William Rhoden Morley, of 160 Forest Road, Walthamstow, son of William Theophilus Morley and Jessie Morley, who died in the battle of the Somme on July 8th 1916, aged 18. Also attached, for interest, is a photo of his memorial plaque. These bronze plaques were presented to the families of all who fell in the 1914-18 war. (I once saw one on display among a collection of horse brasses surrounding the fireplace of a pub in Surrey! However, I said nothing because I felt nobody would care, or understand, why I was so appalled! I also have a picture of my grandfather's boot and shoe repair shop at 160 Forest Road, but can't lay my hands on it for the moment. Vestry House has a copy, though.
Keep up the good work - the Walthamstow Memories will be an important social document and local history resource one day. If I can help in any way, please let me know. Kind regards,

MILLER/MULLER/STEWART/SCOTT - UPDATED VERSION AS AT 10 June 2010 - My paternal Gt.Grandpa's birth name was Heinrich Christopher MULLER (b)c1850 somewhere in Germany. He met & (m) Jane Eliza SCOTT [b.c1854 somewhere in Scotland] in St Georges in the East, London 1874 - his father was recorded as being Peter MULLER, a Mariner & hers was James SCOTT, a Soldier - but neither acted as a witness, so assume not present.
According to the various census, Gt.Grandpa's occupation changed quite a bit ie Sugar Baker, Labourer, Carman (transport), Shop Keeper & died in 1911 whilst working as a Gate Keeper for a firm in West Ham.
According to the various census, Gt.Grandma Jane Eliza often reversed &/or swapped the use of her first names. Also, their surname was Anglicised to MILLER by the time of the 1881 census. They had 7 children in all but some died very young. Their son Heinrich Johann MULLER [aka Henry John MILLER] (b) 1880 in St Georges in the East, London, was a sailor (not sure which service , but think he might have travelled to the Pacific - possibly as a passenger whilst in the navy!? He was living in Russell Rd, Custom House, West Ham when he died in Hospital, as a 'Retired' Seaman 1953. There don't appear to be any records to indicate that he had ever been married &/or had any children!?
Gt.Uncle Henry John was the older brother to my Grandpa Peter F MILLER (b) 1883 in St Georges in the East, London (m) Beatrice Mary STEWART in Walthamstow 1909 & (d) 1935 in West Ham. He'd been injured out of the Army c1914. My Grandparents Peter & Beatrice MILLER also had several children, some died very young but I now have certs of my Dad, Peter Henry MILLER, his brother Jim + sisters Harriet (aka Lily) & Elizabeth (aka Betty), all of whom I'd met at family gatherings, etc. Alas! All long gone now.
If anyone is PERSONALLY able to ancestrally link with above-mentioned souls to help me to add to &/or fill in some gaps, do please get in touch. I'd be more than happy to swap & share info with you.

MILLERS family
Hello John, Since posting my Walthamstow memories of my mother's family, the Millers, at Tower Stables, my e-mail address has changed and could you please change it to tasjude@airenet.com I would also like to add another photo of my mom, taken in 1911. That would have been the year she and her family left Walthamstow for their new life in western Canada. She was 19. I have also since learned from the 1901 U.K. census that two of my dad's great uncles, Walter and George Richardson were also living in Walthamstow at that time. They were both bricklayers. I am sure that my parents wouldn't have known that, as they didn't meet until 1928 in Oyen, Alberta. Incidentally, my dad was a bricklayer, as was his father and grandfather, and as I was until I retired.
I would also like to thank Bill Bayliss again for contacting me with information about Tower Stables, the history of the area, and web sites that gave me pictures of the area. Walthamstow Memories is a wonderful, friendly place to visit again and again.
Thanks John, and all the best in 2007.

MINNS/DAMES
Hello, What a wonderful web site! I'm hoping someone is able to help me. My gt uncle John Royall Minns married Annie Elizabeth Dames at St Mary's church, Walthamstow in Sept 1888. He was described as a cook living at 9 Ravenswood Road and she as a servant of the same address. They subsequently emigrated to the USA via Australia and the Falkland Islands. The American side of the family have always believed that they were married in a church that was "owned" or on land owned by the Royall Minns family. Can anybody throw any light on this story? Or tell me if Ravenswood Rd still exists? I believe the Dames were cabinet makers in the area. Thanking you in anticipation. M Charlston email
MARSHALL
I must firstly congratulate you on your site. I came across this purely by accident and became so engrossed that I forgot my own mission. The letters and articles have evoked many a memory forgotten. I was born in Walthamstow in 1946 and lived at 5 Elm Road until the middle 70's. I too like many others am searching for the ancestors. My grandmother Frances 'Kate' Marshall (nee Walker) and granddad Frederick Marshall lived at 14 Selbourne Avenue from around 1909/10 until their respective deaths, granddad in 1929 and nanny in 1972. They had 8 children, Fred, Lilian (Parsons- my mother), George, Albert, Iris (Keene), Joyce (Smith), Flo (Mitchell, I think) and Bill. All of these children had children of their own, except Fred, so somewhere out there I have many first cousins that I have not seen or heard from for at least a quarter of a century. I am in the process of getting together the family tree but have so far been relatively unsuccessful on this side. I know that nanny was born in Alysham, Norfolk on 21/9/1885. If there is anyone out there that may remember this family or indeed are related to it, I would love to hear from you. Also whilst writing, I note that you have a number of letters from folks that now live abroad. I would also like to contact Dawn Collins who also lived in Elm Road until her mother Jean and brother Stephen moved to Australia in 1957. Dawn, or anyone who may have kept in touch with her, please drop me a line.
Your site is now on my list of favourites and I look forward to maybe being able to contribute from time to time.

NORWOOD
My wife & I are trying to find some information on my wife's maternal grand-parents, Rev W S & Mrs Norwood, who were missionaries at Hoti-Mardan, N.W. India - now Pakistan, & close to the Afghanistan border. We have a photo-copy of the Quarterly Record of the Central Asian Pioneer Mission (January 1904) - the only religious denominational reference is under "Reports of Meetings", where they refer to the Wanstead Cogregational C.E. Societies' Missionary Meeting - my wife's late mother used to talk of her parents beingmarried one midday, & departing England that night for India, never to return. They had9 children, all but 1 born in India, and came to Australia in the late 20's-early 30's,where her father practised as a Congregational Minister.
The Walthamstow connection is that the Home Director, Hon Sec, Hon Treasurer, Hon Publications Secretary, & the Hon Sec of Prayer Union all had Walthamstow addresses, though the Hon Editor was from clifton, Bristol. The Referees (?) were all Rev or Prof, 3 from Bristol,1 from Walthamstow, 1 from Plymouth & 1 from Devonport. I also tried to send a copy of this email to hmsweb.co.uk who, I gather, delve into the history of Walthamstow, but it couldn't get through. I'm hopeful that you can throw a little more light on the subject - anything at all would gratefully received. Would you like a photo-copy of the Quarterly Record as well? Hello Daniel,
POWELL family of 66 South Grove, Walthamstow 1881 - 1920
My last post indicated that I had discovered the identity of my father Albert Powell, but as it turns out I have not been able to confirm this.
Albert is believed to be the illegitimate son of Mabel Ethel Powell, who was born in 1890 (West Ham), daughter of William Henry and Eliza Powell, married 1881. William Henry Powell was born 1858 and he and his wife Eliza (nee Hall Smith) had two other children, Thomas Henry (born 1882) Shoreditch, and Albert Frederick Powell, born Edmonton 1887.
The birth of Albert Powell to Mabel Ethel Powell is recorded as the 9 June 1919 at the Forest Gate Sick Home, although there are no records with those archives of this birth taking place.
My Dad, Albert, was sent to Western Australia in 1927 aged 8 and I still try to confirm his identity. I am naturally curious about talking with any descendants of the above family who may have moved to Lewisham. There is a marriage record for a Mabel Ethel Powell to Maurice Donaldson at Lewisham (Sept Qtr 1929) though I cannot prove this is the same Mabel Ethel Powell.
William Henry Powell was a Railway Clerk. I'm not sure of his death, but I think it may have been in the 1920's.
It is believed my father Albert had three sisters. Did Mabel Ethel Powell have a daughter Elizabeth, West Ham, Sept Qtr 1915?
I would be grateful for any information on the above family.
I am also curious to any links to the Powells of (Loughton) Essex, namely David Powell (1764-1832) and/or his daughter Caroline Powell, grandmother to Georgina Beatrice Crawley.
Please refer any responses to Barbara Powell, barbspow@gmail.com.
Thank you Daniel. Kind regards.

I am trying to find out more out my mother's family background and wonder if anyone using this site may be able to help.
My grandparents, Henry and Florence Pearce lived in 404 Hoe Street till about 1933. Their two daughters, Phyllis Eleanor (my mother) and Eunice were born in 1910 and 1917. Both girls went to a nearby school, Carisbrooke College - can find no trace of this, in Carisbrooke Road somewhere, presumbably? Anything (text or photos) from anyone who knows about that area, what buildings or shops or schools were there at the time...........would be helpful.
Thanks.

Thank you,

PASOLA
Thanks to your splendid site, I have spotted the following - who I know to be relatives of mine by my Grandmother's first marriage. I refer to Charlie (Carlo Antonio's) PASOLA family from Newcastle, whose cousins were the SILMONS, WELD SILMONS and De WELD SILMONS from Sarah Jane MONAGHAN SERRANO's marriage to William Osman WELD SILMON (who originally had a Moroccan Arabic name and was born in Tetuan, c. 1853-56, died at 68 De Gray Street, Benwell, Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1918). Charlie was my Uncle, brother to Leonora Maria ("Lola"), so Terry PASOLA (see below), is one of my long lost Cousins, from one generation or another. Can you possibly put me in touch? Terry left no e-mail link to contact - otherwise, I would not be imposing on you like this, for which please accept my sincerest apologies. Every good wish for further successes with your wonderful and immensely helpful site. POWELL, Mabel
I am searching for Mabel Ethel Powell (or living relatives of), formerly of 66 South Grove, Walthamstow, who gave birth to a boy Albert on 9 June 1919 at the Forest Gate Sick Home. Albert Powell is my father. He was put into the Dorney Children's Home, Dorney, near Windsor, as a baby until 1927 when, aged 8, he was sent to Western Australia under the auspices of the Kingsley Fairbridge Child Emigration Scheme. All his life he searched for his birth certificate and details of his parents, but he never found or knew, or was told his identity. Only just this week, after twenty years research myself, including a trip to England in 1992, was I sent the above details which confirms his identity. It is truly remarkable! I wonder if anyone can imagine what it has been like for my father and I wanting to know our family, and the incredible task we undertook to try and find out - a whole lifetime. I set upon the task from this day forward with the hopeful endeavour of finding my grandmother and possible living relatives. I never thought I would ever know. For my father's sake, this is truly a major achievement in our family history. With grateful thanks.

Thanks.

A long shot - does any-one know of my ancestors the Raffe family who lived at 61 Turner Road in the 1911 census. They were still there in 1914. Frank Ernest was my great grandfather his wife was Anna Louise and she was Swiss apparently with broken English. Frank was born in Suffolk but came to Walthamstow via Birmingham and Glasgow! his occupation was in hosiery or outfitting (shop). He upped and left the family in 1914 for Canada- I'd like to know why?! And why did my grandfather Edward change his name from Edward Treschler (many spellings) Raffe to Edward Thomas Lee? What I'd really love is some photo's of the family to show my father as he didn't know anything about them.Anything would be amazing, thanks.

I hope there is someone out there that can help us get in contact and I appreciate the opportunity your site has given me to maybe find her.

SHEPHERD Family - Posted on 31 Jan 2012:
My Grandmother Florence Rhoda Shepherd was born in Wood Street Walthamstow. My Dad was told that she was born in a caravan near Leyton Station, so I wondered about the connection, but I have just found reference to an address given as Caravan in fields, Wood Street in relation to another family tree so there may be some validity in what my Dad was told. Also, I was told my Grandmother came from Traveller/circus people. I would be interested to hear from anyone who may know something about the history of the family.

STEWART/BARTLETT/BANNOCKS - Posted 15 Aug 2011

In the hope that I'll find a friendly soul, somewhere out there, who can help me find my STEWART ancestors back from my g/mother Beatrice Mary STEWART & maybe any siblings.
My search has been hampered because I don't know WHERE Beatrice was born. However, I do have a copy of her (m) cert so here goes.
Beatrice Mary STEWART (m) Peter Frederick MILLER Oct 1909 at James the Greater Parish Church in Walthamstow, Essex.
Peter Frederick MILLER (age 25) of 38 Netley Rd, Walthamstow (his dad was a Gate Keeper)
and Beatrice Mary STEWART (age 21) of [**] home address given as 891 Lea Bridge Road, Walthamstow (her dad was a Cook).
According to the Poll records it seems that, at least as at the time of the 1908 Poll, [**] 891 Lea Bridge Rd was formerly known as 95 Chestnut Walk. Also (at least from the 1908 upto the 1910 Poll) the only person at the address qualified to vote was a John Huxley SANDERS.
ANY info would be most welcomed, but if anyone is able to advise WHY Beatrice was at that address & in what capacity ie as a relative, lodger, employee, etc, along with establishing WHO Mr Sanders was) would be especially helpful, please. Some, or all of which, could possibly lead me to discover whence Beatrice Mary STEWART came from.
My name is Pam RAY (nee MILLER of West Ham, London). My parents were Peter Henry MILLER (b) 1912 & May [nee HUTCHINES (b) 1916] both of West Ham.
We (hubby & me) now live in Bristol. Looking forward to hearing from anyone from the great army of Researchers out there. Manwhile, kindest thoughts for your success in your researching.

STEWART/MILLER/MULLER/SCOTT - ** UPDATED VERSION AS AT 10 JUNE 2010 **
Since placing my original article on the Walthamstow Memories website (under Family History) a MIRACLE has occurred!
Whilst having set up camp by many a brickwall (family researcher's nightmare) doggedly chipping away - looking for any gleam of light, so to speak - I met a Genealogist who specialised in 'adopted birth' records, thus had a 'nose' for finding less well known records. She (Gina) could venture where I could not! Gina was, indeed, THE miracle, as we met by pure chance.
Gina discovered that my paternal Grandma Miller's birth name was Phoebe Mary STEWART (aka Beatrice Mary MILLER.
I now have copies of her certs for (b) in Aug 1888 - address 38 Clerk St, MEOT, Middx; (m) to MILLER of Walthamstow 1909; [widowed in 1935] Beatrice (re-m) to widower DIPPLE of Woodford Wells 1944; + her (d) of 1967 in Forest Gate, West Ham.
Beatrice (m) Peter F MILLER of 38 Netley Rd, Walthamstow & gave her address as 891 Lea Bridge Road, Walthamstow. (I've since discovered that one of her sisters worked for the owners of the property, John Huxley SANDERS, Confectioner, at that address).
Beatrice's father (my maternal Gt.Grandpa) was James STEWART (b) c1855 in Belfast, Ireland (& his father, John, was a Farmer in Co.Antrim then).
Apart from other occupations in between, James was a Cook/Merchant Seaman for many years. When he met & (m) Gt.Grandma Harriet Priscilla KIRBY [b.c1855 in Yorkshire] in St.Georges in the East, London 1882 he was already a widower - but I'm still struggling to find the records of his first marriage.
James & Harriet STEWART eventually moved to & lived for many years at 62 Mansfield Rd, Walthamstow - Phoebe (aka Beatrice Mary) was one of many children. Harriet died c1906(?). James (re-m) to widow Emily Alice BARLETT (nee BANNOCKS) 15 Aug 1909 & were then residing at 38 Netley Rd (former address of my Grandpa Peter F MILLER).
At the time of the 1911 census Emily Alice STEWART was living at 18 Vernon Rd, Walthamstow with some of the STEWART children. (Yet to be confirmed - but James might have already died by then!?).
If anyone is PERSONALLY able to ancestrally link with above-mentioned souls to help me to add to &/or fill in some gaps, do please get in touch. I'd be more than happy to swap & share info with you.
[PS.: additional ancestral related details under: MILLER/MULLER/STEWART/SCOTT .]

SIMMONS
I'm a Canadian, but my father and his family were from Walthamstow, and I'd love to find out more about them.
My dad: Sidney Alfred Walter SIMMONS was born April 17, 1904 at 73 Edward Road in Walthamstow to: Sidney George SIMMONS, born Dec. 27, 1882 in Walthamstow and Ada Rosina Jack, born June 3, 1880 in Poplar, London. The generation before that also hailed from Walthamstow.
Henry SIMMONS was born in Walthamstow in 1856 and died there Nov. 18, 1921.
He was married to: Cordelia Alice RAE, born in Walthamstow in 1858.
Sidney George Simmons was a joiner journeyman. He and his wife Ada had 3 other children.
Lily Ada SIMMONS was born Jan. 29, 1903 and Ernest Henry was born Dec. 19, 1905, both in Walthamstow.
Their youngest, Violet Hilda, was born Jan. 11, 1914, in Edmonton , Canada.
Sidney George Simmons left his family in England on April 17, 1910 to come to Canada. His wife and 3 children followed 2 years later. While in Walthamstow, the family also lived at 3, Carnarvon Road.
Does anyone have any information that could help me? Thanks for any help,

Dear Sir,
I am interested in finding out the whereabouts of the owner of a television shop that existed in Wood Street in the 1980s, I believe on the corner of Waverley Rd although I'm not to sure of that. It was on a corner. His Christian name was Terry. I would be most grateful for any information. I also owned a shop in Winchester Road, Highams Park, and would be very interested in contacting him again.
Thank you.

TOYE family - 9 Apr 2010:
Hi, I was very interested to read the information on the Monday family (Jun 09). Unfortunately, I can't shed any light on the Mondays however Alfred Toye Snr, (licenced victualler in 1901 of the [now] Common Gate Hotel, 131 Markhouse Rd, Walthamstow) was my great, great grandfather & Alfred Toye Jnr, was my great grandfather. Alfred Jnr in his second marriage had two (more) children - Marjorie & George Charles Toye, (my grandfather). George was born in Walthamstow & flew at the wartime RAF aerodrome at Croydon airport. He died in London in 1996. Last year my father, Mike Toye visited the hotel and went to find the house on 245 Markhouse Road where Alfred Jnr was born - unfortunately this no longer exists. I have attached a link to a picture of the hotel. In a lot of the old certificates Toye is spelt Toye', confirming the family story of a French link.

Hi!..Came upon your site purely by chance whilst trying to trace my family tree!..Hoping that someone may be able to help with the following..My Great Grandfather was Thomas Charles Taylor (b.1855) married Louisa Harriet Vaughan (b,1858) they had 8 children one of which was my late Grandmother Constance Maud...she married Archibald James Drury on 24th August 1913..they had 2 sons Ronald A. Drury (b,2nd Qtr 1914) and Douglas J. Drury (b. 4th Qtr 1918)..I know from a cousin several times removed, that the 2 boys were given/taken into foster/adoption care probably around 1920/21..if anyone has any information I would be very grateful...it appears my grandmother then met my grandfather (Constance Maud Drury nee Taylor + Arthur Birch Jarvis) and had 5 more children...therefore if either of the 2 boys from her first marriage are still living they may like to know that they have half brother(s) and sister(s)...also my Great Grandfather re-married after the death of my Great Grandmother..does anyone have any recollection of Florence Maud Taylor nee Westwood married 22nd June 1918...they had a daughter Maud Evelyn Taylor (b. 25th Ocber 1918)...my great grandfather is noted as being a solicitors clerk on Census returns...buried at Manor Park Cemetary...The Families mentioned are known to have lived in the following roads, Hoe Street, Grove Green Road, Aveling Park Road, Church Hill (Hall)?...Many thanks in hopeful anticipation!

TURNER/STEVENSON
I am very new to searching family ancestry. I am a first generation New Zealander and currently trying to put together a family tree. My great grandmother was Mary Ann TURNER born February 1865 from Walthamstow. Her father was Francis Thoms TURNER. He married Susanna Goronlock. I do not have any dates of birth, marriage or death of these great great grandparents. If anyone reading this has any information on this family line, would you please reply to this. My father came to live in New Zealand in the late 1940s. His father also came from Walthamstow, he was Horace Joseph STEVENSON. I am also interested in my great grandfather on that side. He was William Hnery STEVENSON. I look forward to any help available, or suggestions. Thanks. Linda Lucas email
TUCKER
I am seeking information on my great uncle ROBERT ALEXANDER TUCKER who lived in WINCHESTER ROAD in 1901. He moved soon after this but I believe he stayed in the area. My grandfather (his brother) FREDERICK ALBERT TUCKER may have lived in the area as well. They were both PHOTOGRAPHERS who had lived in Dalston previously. Wife of Robert was Eleanor and wife of Frederick was Sarah. Any information on these two men, their children especially or their professions would be greatly appreciated. Viv email
TURNER
Hi from Perth Australia, I have collected information about and made up a family tree about the Turners of Walthamstow, namely the descendants of George Turner and Mary Embleton who married there in 1759. While one branch is known to go onto settle in St Brides, Fleet St, London by 1800, and my branch set up in Tottenham from 1793, there were still plenty of Turners in Walthamstow in the 1840s - Alfred was a carpenter, and Nathaniel owned a grocery store about this time. Please email me if you are connected to the Turners of Walthamstow pre 1870. Sharon Middleton. email

TUTING
I am currently working on my family tree and have found a fair bit of information but still have some holes! Perhaps someone can help……
Father – John William Albert Tuting (17 Havant Rd, Walthamstow) (b. 25 Jan 1935)
Grandfather and Grandmother – John Albert Tuting and Caroline Nash (b. 08/08/1913 and 1304/1913) Grandfathers parents – Albert Tuting and Madeline Amelia Rachel ????
Grandmothers parents – William Nash and Sarah Pickett (married 1893 in Bethnal Green) From what I can gather William Nash spent some time on board a ‘training ship’, the result of a misspent period of his youth I believe! My grandmother had a sister Lily(Lil) who married an Alfred(Alf) Pullum but that is another branch to the tree. Son Terry and Alfred(?). Terry and my father were, apart from being cousins, the best of friends and more like brothers. I understand the Nash family still live in and around Walthamstow so perhaps someone will recognise some of the names above.
My Godfather was a David Glassock who also lived in Havant Road and I would be interested in any light shed on his family too. Both my grandparents worked at the Rossi Ice Cream factory, as did one of my great grandfathers. Grandfather was in the RAF during WWII and eventually became a plasterer as did my father. My father was born in Upper Walthamstow Road and I in Thorpe Combe Hospital. If anyone can further my research I would be very grateful. Sorry if this info is a bit ‘bitty’ but that’s all I got so far! Many Thanks David Tuting email

Amazing to find your site! Thank you. I am trying to find some information regarding my grandfather, William Edward Wade who I believe was a grocer during the 1920's, 30.s and possibly 40's. I am not sure whether he had his own business, or was a manager. I do recollect 'Sainsburys' being mentioned, with mention of my grandfather being the manager of the first Sainsbury store! My father, Jack Frederick Wade was born around 1914. He went to Sir George Monnaux school. My grandfather moved to Cheshunt, possibly sometime in the 40's, where he had his own grocery business 'W.E. Wade & Son, which my father took over in the early 1950's.
I would very much appreciate it if you could post this for me. Thank you.

I came across your Walthamstow site out of interest in my father's early life as he was born there in 1909.
In reading through the 'ancestors' section I came across an entry requesting information on Albert Thomas WORMAN. The request was written by a Chris Spence but I have been unable to contact him by email, postal mail or telephone as he appears to have moved. The Albert Worman quoted was my father's cousin. My father is still in good health aged 95!
Would you please add a short paragraph to the ancestors page such as "WORMAN, Albert Thomas. Would Chris Spence please contact Colin Worman via colin.worman@btinternet.com for further information" I would be most grateful if you could do this for me (and Chris Spence). Many thanks

Alfred Thomas Worman. I am trying to trace my grandfather's background I was told he was born in Walthamstow 30/03/1900 or 1901 and I do remember him saying he was born in East London. He had one sister known as Sis possibly named Lena and a brother called Fred. He was a twin but I believe the brother died at birth and it may be his mothers name was Rose. They moved to Dunstable, Bedfordshire sometime between the two world wars. Alfred worked for A.C.Delco there and Waterlow Printers. During the war he served in the navy and was at some point on the Glory and the Belfast and also was a chief petty officer during this stint. If you have any info ref our Alf if could please send it to me Chris Spence at 25 Grove Avenue, Finchley, N3 1QS or via email. Many thanks,

I have ancestors who were from Walthamstow and I have a kind friend in England who is willing to drive to Walthamstow to take photos of properties for me. I need to know however, if the properties exist before I send her off on a long drive.
Eight years ago I was visiting England and found and took photos of 4 Carnarvon Road, a house where my father lived in 1905. Since then, I have found two other addresses.
One is 73 Edward Avenue. I see on a map that there is an Edward Avenue, but I need to know if there is a 73 on it. My father was born at that address in 1904.
The other address is 3 Ashford Road. Does this address still exist? My grandfather was born at that address in 1882.
I would be very grateful if you could let me know if there are still properties at those addresses.
Thanks so much,
